Levonelle One Step is an emergency contraceptive pill also known as the morning after pill. It is used for those times when sexual intercourse has been unprotected and there is a chance of becoming pregnant. It works by preventing an egg from being released from the ovaries as well as changing the lining of the womb and making it thinner. This protects against the egg settling in the womb and fertilising. It contains 1500mg of Levonorgestrel the active ingredient in Levonelle. It works also by thickening the mucus at the cervix and preventing the sperm to enter.

The Levonelle pill works for up to 72 hours but works best if it is taken very close to the time of unprotected sex. It is not a regular contraceptive pill and should only be used in emergencies.

Levonelle can cause certain side affects as can all medicines. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the pill another pill should be taken. It may cause spotting and vaginal bleeding as well as abdominal pain. It may also mess around with your usual menstrual cycle and either delay or make your next period come a little earlier. There is also a likelihood that your breasts may become tender and you will experience dizziness and diarrhoea.

Levonelle is available over the counter to women over 16. Anyone under the age of 16 must see a health professional in order to be prescribed Levonelle. It is also available online. If buying Levonelle online it is only available in advance to be kept in case of emergency. If the unprotected sex has already occurred Levonelle cannot be guaranteed for delivery within 72 hours.  In that case, a morning after pill must be bougth from the regular pharmacist or prescribed by your doctor.
