Chemists use this knowledge to learn the composition, and properties of unfamiliar substances, as well as to reproduce and synthesize large quantities of useful natural substances and create new synthesised substances and helpful processes. Chemists may specialise in any amount of subdisciplines of chemistry. Materials scientists and metallurgists share a lot of the same education and talents with chemists. The roots of chemistry can be traced to the phenomenon of burning. Fire was a magical force that transformed one substance into another and so was of primary interest to mankind. After gold was discovered and became an expensive metal, many individuals were interested to find a method that might convert other substances into gold. This led straight to the protoscience called Alchemy. The word chemist comes from the New Latin noun chimista, an abbreviation of alchimista ( alchemist ).

Alchemists discovered many chemical processes that led straight to the development of modern chemistry. Chemistry as we know it today, was conceived by Antoine Lavoisier with his law of Conservation of mass in 1783. The findings of the chemical elements has an extensive history terminating in the creating of the continual table by Dmitri Mendeleev. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry created in 1901 gives an excellent overview of chemical discovery since the beginning of the 20th century.

Roles for chemists usually need at least a bachelor’s degree, but many positions, particularly those in research, require a Ph.D. Most undergraduate programs emphasise arithmetic and physics as well as chemistry, in part because chemistry is sometimes called “the central science”, therefore chemists should have a well rounded knowledge about science. At the Master’s level and higher, students tend to concentrate on a specific field. Fields of specialization include biochemistry, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, unproven chemistry, quantum chemistry, environmental chemistry, and physical chemistry. Postdoctoral experience may be required for certain positions.
